In this podcast episode, I explore how fear and pride are both counterproductive motivations for school leadership. So what is a healthier motivation? Listen in for a conversation that school leaders often never have with one another, but one that may prevent you from feeling overwhelmed in your road ahead.

Here are show-notes for PMP Episode 7:

1. An elementary principal friend emailed me a note with a powerful reminder of why we serve as school leaders.
2. It’s so difficult to hold onto the healthy motivations that keep us inspired as leaders, but we need to hold onto the awesome moments of our day in order to maintain balance.
3. Motivation by “awe” is what separates workers from creators. It’s what separates jobs from callings.
4. Tim Keller explains the unhealthy motivations of fear and pride. What’s the alternative? Beauty.
5. When we’re motivated by wonder, we see students as people not projects, parents as partners not opponents, and teachers as teammates not employees.

Conclusion

When you find the healthiest motivations for leading, then you see your position as a calling, which keeps your leadership positive.

Now It’s Your Turn

When are some ways you can identify when you are motivated to make a decision based on fear or pride? When you do, ask yourself how can you make this decision based on what’s best for others.
