In episode 8 of Principal Matters Podcast, I continue a conversation on the importance of understanding your motivations for why you lead.
Based on an original blog post, 3 Tips for Making Each Day Count, I share some insights inspired by Robert Smith’s 20,000 Days and Counting–the lessons of a 50 year old when he calculates the number of days he’s lived.
Here are show-notes for PMP Episode 8:
1. Each year we host a pre-enrollment meeting with upcoming 9th graders. I explain how high school students have about 1,500 days of their lives in your school. How can we make the most of them?
2. When a twenty-year old friend asked me, “What are your life goals now?” I was confronted with the need for reevaluating. This led to some new goals, like creating my first book.
3. We can often find ourselves being pulled by the urgent needs around us rather than the specific goals we need to reach. So what are the best ways we can encourage making most of the time we have?
A. Set bold personal goals.
Don’t set goals that are easily attainable. Where do you want to see yourself grow?
B. Model for others the kinds of goals you want them setting for themselves.
Lead by example so that others see you fulfilling your own.
C. Share with others the lessons you learn from your failures and successes.
By sharing you help others grow and you also grow.

Now It’s Your Turn
What are some bold, audacious goals you can set for yourself and your team this year? When you set these kinds of goals for yourself, then you serve others with more meaning and effectiveness.
